We saw the largest hand dug well in Greensburg, Kansas. The small town was devastated by a tornado in May of 2007, where 95% of the town was destroyed. The damage and reconstruction of the whole town was as amazing to me as the historical well that provided water to the city until 1932. The well was 109 feet deep and 32 feet in diameter.
We went through the Gunfighter's Wax Museum. I learned lots of information on old cowboys like Billy the Kid, Doc Holliday, and Wyatt Earp. There was also information on the Indians and their tribes.
We also toured the Boot Hill Museum in Dodge City, Kansas. I believe I could stay there a week and still not soak all the information in that is there. It makes history real to me how the real cowboys lived and fought and died. Kansas was real cowboy country.
(Sadie and Sophie in the schoolhouse.)
The museum is huge with original buildings that were saloons, stores, a house, church, school, jail, cemetery, restaurants, and had original artifacts from those years on display. There is also a stagecoach ride and a train from that time. Everything is replicated after Front Street in 1876. It made me want to put on my corset and saddle a horse and plant corn.
We also went to the Dodge City Zoo. It was located in the city park. It was a small zoo with about 45 animals. The oddest thing was that Sophie's favorite part was feeding the ducks.
We finished our day in Dodge City at the Roundup Rodeo. We watched the usual rodeo events bull riding, barrel racing, team roping, bronco riding, and rodeo clowns. I was impressed to see an outstanding fireworks show immediately after the rodeo. It was a nice finishing touch. YEEHAW!! That was Sadie and Sophie's first rodeo. They both loved it.
And I thought all there was to Kansas was hay bales, cornfields, and wind turbines!! We had a ball!!! Thanks Mom for a wonderful week.... I love you!!!
(I uploaded more photos on myspace. Check them out.)

WOW!! Who would have thought there was so much to see and do in Kansas!
I had the same reaction when we spent 2 1/2 weeks in Oklahoma last summer. Who would have thought that there would be so many interesting things to do and see in Oklahoma.
Glad you had a good trip and are feeling better.
