Halloween's Eve

It has come and gone again, and I made it through another Halloween. Sadie was "too old" to go trick or treating, but she still participated in the dressing up part to some extent. She was a cowgirl. A beautiful right off the farm cowgirl.

I have to admit that I don't like Halloween. In my mind I can't justify having one day set aside to get dressed up and go from door to door saying trick or treat to fill a bucket of candy. But I do it for the kids.

I would rather go to Walmart and get backs of candy and give it to my girls to rot their teeth out without all the hassle of the Halloween hustle and bustle. But I do it for the girls.

And it is cute to see all of the kids dressed up as ghouls and princesses. But it's not necessary to spend lots of money on a costume they are only going to wear for a couple of hours. So this year we recycled. Sadie used a costume that she could pull together with her normal everyday items and Sophie used a costume that Sadie used last year. She was a little pumpkin girl. A beautiful orange pumpkin.

I'm not saying that we don't ever do scary or traditional costumes. Sadie has been a ghost, a clown, a princess, a bumble bee, a pumpkin, a cat, etc. before on different Halloweens. We do participate in the events. I just don't get excited about it.

However, my mother informed me last night that I did get excited about it when I was a kid. She said I loved going trick or treating. I don't remember that.

I'm not saying she's lying, if you believe a woman that used to lock her kid out of the house when it was cold.

But I sacrifice my judgement of Halloween for the kids and try not to alter their opinion. I take them trick or treating and get them costumes and buy them candy for their school parties.

And really it's only one night out of the year. It's not like we have to trick or treat the whole month of October.

And really it wasn't that bad this year because of our city has started blocking off a section of Main Street and the kids can trick or treat at the businesses safely and without worrying about all the traffic.

And of course, who couldn't love these two Halloween trick or treaters? Aren't they beautiful?
