And I mess it up!
Let's just say that I am no longer in the running for the Mother of the Year award.
It went down like this:
Sophie gets off the school bus yesterday before I get home from work. She has had a long day because her excitement is at it's peak level. Her tooth has been loose for a couple of months now and the anticipation of it coming out has been too much for all of us to bear. When I walk through the door, I find her asleep on the couch. She instantly wakes up and shows me her tooth. Prepared to feel the tooth again, for the forty-leventh time [that's my mothers adjective] it surprises me that it is barely holding on by a thread. I ask her if she wants me to pull it. She tells me yes, that she has been waiting all day long for me to pull it. She goes on to tell me that she didn't eat lunch because she didn't want her tooth to fall out while she was eating. (Probably the real reason why she had to take a nap when she got home-she was FAMISHED!) She tells me that she was going to let Mrs. Hill pull it, but then she decided that she wanted her Momma to do it. (How sweet) I get a paper towel and prepare her for the sight of blood. A gentle pull and that baby popped right out.
I tell her to put her tooth in a sandwich baggie so we don't loose it because the Tooth Fairy only leaves money when you leave a tooth. Sophie says she is going to put it under her bed so the Tooth Fairy doesn't have to look underneath her pillow to find it. I assure her that the Tooth Fairy is good at finding teeth under pillows and that it will confuse her if she puts it under the bed. She agrees that is the best place. I immediately facebook her toothless picture to show off my sweet little girl's smile with her first tooth gone.
Fast forward to this morning, when I am in the shower. I overslept and was in the shower when the girls go out the door with Larry, going to school. I realize that I forgot to leave the money under Sophie's pillow last night. And I cry. Poor little Sophie's first experience with the Tooth Fairy and she gets no money and the tooth is still in the baggie under her pillow!! I freak out!
I have all kinds of excuses that I can throw out there about how busy things are right now. I had a meeting and didn't get back home until 8:00, which is 30 minutes before bed time. This is cheerleader tryout week. Sadie is stressing about that and that's on my mind constantly, as well as "Orange, Black and White, Scrapper team Let's Fight." Last night I gave her a pep talk about it not being the end of the world if she doesn't make it, and how I turned out just fine. Molly has RSV and a double ear infection and I have to literally hold her down before bed time to give her antibiotics and do a breathing treatment on her. Plus, I am stopped up worse that a hair clogged drain and took some NyQuil last night to try to remedy myself.
But even with all of that, it is inexcusable that I forgot to make the Tooth Fairy come. Inexcusable!
I wanted so bad to run to her school in my robe and appologize to her and give her hugs to make her feel better. I wanted to rewind to last night so that I could undo the wrong that I did when I went to bed without sneaking ever-so-quietly in her room to retrieve the tooth and replace it with cash. I wanted to talk to her and see just how mad she is at the Tooth Fairy for not following through on her end of the deal. I wanted to make it better and right the wrong. But I couldn't do any of that. So, I went to work and have decided to correct my mistake with this letter that Sophie will find under her pillow, along with her money, when she gets home from school.
Dear Sophie,
I am so sorry that I am late getting your tooth. I had so many little kids on my list last night and I did not get to your house until after morning. You were already gone when I got there. I had the wrong address for you in my file. When I got to your old house, I realized that you did not live there any more. I finally found your new house and have put your new address in my file.
I usually do not leave letters, only a gift for the tooth that you leave for me. But I wanted to let you know how sorry I am that I was late. Your tooth is very clean and shiny. I can tell that you are taking good care of them. Thank you so much. This tooth is the one that I have been looking for. It will be perfect in my collection.
Love,
The Tooth Fairy
