Last year I tried to get Sophie to give basketball a try. She said that she didn't know how to play basketball and she didn't want to play basketball. She said she wanted to be a cheerleader. That was that. I left it at that and didn't push. This year, I started a little earlier and asked her about basketball. She said that she wasn't sure, but she would think about it. She started playing with them at recess a little and decided she would give it a try. Larry got her a basketball goal and we started showing her the basics. We signed her up.
We would go to the high school games and I would tell her to pay attention and she would learn alot. She was interested. She was watching. She was learning.
I almost lost it one evening when we were watching the high school game. She leaned over real close to me and asked me, "Which one is the quarterback?"
We all have had a good laugh out of that one. Bless her soul. She really didn't know anything about basketball and she had been to so many football games that she only knew football lingo.
It didn't take long after she started practicing to figure things out though.
The best part to me is that we get to go watch Sophie perform something. We are always on the go following Sadie all over the state. Sophie has never complained and she does enjoy it, but I wanted us to be able to cheer for her and support her too.
Sophie got to pick her basketball number. It didn't surprise me one bit when she picked number one. She has a huge crush on Hunter White and has cheered for him all year in football. Hunter's number is one. This is a bit concerning for me because Hunter is 17. She knows that he is too old for her. She doesn't care.
Sophie has really surprised me on the court. Every game she gets better and better. She is getting more aggressive and more confidant. She absolutely loves basketball. She told me that she wants to quit gymnastics because she doesn't want to cheer now. She only wants to play basketball and golf.
As shy as she is, I thought she would be more timid and more bashful about playing in front of people. Boy was I wrong. She has invited everyone she can think of to come to her games. She gets out there and hustles and gives it all that she has. She still has alot to learn, but she is on the right track to be a straight up baller if she sticks with it.
And Sadie planned a little surprise for Sophie at her last game. She invited Hunter to come watch Sophie play. I thought she would be embarrassed. But if she was, she didn't show it a bit. So sweet of him to come watch her. He's a good kid. And Sophie was beyond excited.
